    What is AHIP certification

Any one who is either in Medicare sales or considering adding them to their current business will ask the question:  What is AHIP certification.

First, let us explain who AHIP is:

AHIP is the most proactive health care association in our nation.  They have representatives in every state capital and are up to date on all the latest health industry information/changes.  They provide health related information and coverage for hundreds of millions of people in America.  Their main job is to improve and protect the consumer’s health and financial security.  AHIP is committed to market-based solutions and partnerships that improve the well-being of consumers. AHIP’s  goal is to make sure consumers have the best health care options as well as an affordable rate.

    Second, what is AHIP certification:

AHIP certification is an industry wide, accepted method that proves that you both understand and are ready to sell Medicare according to CMS regulations. This procedure is in place to protect the rights of the consumer.

Almost every Medicare Advantage as well as Prescription Drug Plan Carrier requires you to pass AHIP in order to be appointed to sell.  Once you pass the AHIP test, you must still complete carrier specific certifications.

    Third, preparing for the exam:

It is best to study each module of the AHIP course very carefully. Pay close attention to the practice questions; you may see them on your exam.  It is the goal of AHIP to ensure that anyone who sells Medicare can pass the exam.

You can take AHIP training either directly from the AHIP site for a cost of $175 or you can take the course from one of the major carrier’s.  If you decide to take it from a carrier’s site, the cost is lowered to $125.

As of June 23, 2020, you must complete ALL review questions before you can start the next training module.  This way you can be sure you understand each section before moving on to the next module.  Please use these questions to help you focus on areas where you need more time to study.  You can use the review questions as many times as you like and the answers do not count toward your AHIP  final exam grade.  Course guide available here

    What is AHIP Certification Tips:

    • Many of the review questions are the exact same questions on the 50 question test.  Make sure you know all the review questions and answers well.  More than half of the test questions will be almost identical to the review questions.
    • Remember to complete the FWA training and test after you have passed the Medicare portion of the AHIP exam
    • You do not need AHIP to sell Medicare supplements plans
    • Most MAPD, MA and PDP plans require you to take and pass AHIP in order to offer their plans. UHC is an exception to this.

    Finally, about the exam:

This is an online exam.  There are 50 questions to answer and it is an open book test with a 2 hour time limit. The test consists of 2 parts and you must pass both in order to be AHIP certified.  Each participant has 3 attempts to pass the test.  You can purchase an additional 3 tries, although many carriers will not allow you to sell their products for the year if you don’t pass by the third attempt.
