Medicare Flex Spending Cards
Medicare Flex Spending Cards are an additional benefit to Medicare Advantage Plans. These help purchase pre-approved items like medical equipment and more. Typically linked to a flexible spending account, these cards are a benefit of qualifying health plans. These cards, issued by private insurance companies, are only available on specific plans.
Medicare Advantage plans have grown in popularity. Plans are more attractive because they offer benefits above and beyond medical coverage. Medicare flex spending cards are now a part of this trend. Most plans on the market include ancillary benefits like vision, dental and hearing. Additionally, plans can also offer over the counter (OTC) benefits. OTC benefits allow beneficiaries to purchase items not requiring prescriptions at no cost. While over the counter benefits have been offered for a while, a few new benefits have arrived. For example, grocery benefits. Plans give beneficiaries a card loaded with funds for the purchase of health foods. Part B give back plans are now available. Give back plans give beneficiaries money back to cover the part b premium. (Click here to learn more.) Below are a few carriers that offer flex spending benefits.

Wellcare also offers a flex card for utility expenses on select plans. The allowance is $50 per month. This allowance does not carry over month to month. As always, be sure to check specific plan details for availability.
Anthem
Anthem offers a similar benefit. Certain MAPD plans in some states offer an annual $500 benefit. This benefit is on top of what the health plan covers. As a result beneficiaries can choose how to spend the annual allowance.
Cigna
The Cigna Medicare benefit differs a bit. In select Dual Special Needs Plans (DSNP), Cigna is offering customers a debit card they can use to pay for certain expenses. The maximum benefit amount varies by plan. Beneficiaries use Cigna Cash Card Funds towards many items. These items include: food, utilities, medication, medical and dental bills, and more. The funds are added to a Visa debit card each month. Therefore, cards can be used anywhere a Visa card is accepted. Unused balances roll forward each month. However, balances must be used within 3 years from benefit year. Click here for details about this benefit.
