How To Become An Insurance Agent 2020

How to become an insurance agent 2020 will walk you through all the steps needed to be licensed, contracted, certified (for insurance types that require it) and ready to sell.  You will also find information about sales methods, leads and other things you will need along the way.

    Get your insurance license

The first step is to get your insurance license.  We have created a article that provides all the specifics you will need:  CLICK HERE TO LEARN HOW

    Contracting with companies

Once you get the insurance license, you can start to work on contracting with insurance companies. Thought needs to go into which type of insurance plans you intend to sell.  The main types offered usually are Life, Disability, Long Term Care (traditional, hybrid and asset based) Medicare (Advantage, supplement and part D) Annuities, vision, dental, health and indemnity type products. Some agents get set up to offer all types of products while others specialize in certain types.  Once you determine which plan types you want, you then need to see which companies are most competitive with that type of plan.   We can provide you access to a quote site which can be useful to compare plans and companies to help figure out which ones are most competitive in your state.  CLICK FOR EXAMPLE OF OUR QUOTE SITE    Call our office for further guidance on choosing carriers at 203-796-5403

Errors and Omissions insurance (E and O)

Just about all carriers will not require you to get E and O insurance in order to get set up to offer their plans. E and O is insurance the provides agents with coverage for any mistakes, errors or omissions they may make when selling insurance.  In the event you are sued, E and O would be an insurance (like malpractice insurance) police to protect you from the costs associates with it.

Click here for more information on E and O insurance

    Certifications

Some products will require you to become certified before you are able to sell them.  This is most common with Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans.  You will need to pass an annual certification with each carrier before you are able to offer them and receive compensation.   Click here to learn more

Most products such as life insurance, final expense, disability, vision and dental insurance do not have a certification requirement.
