If you do not pass on the first 3 tries:
You can pay for the the test again to get 3 more chances. Many carriers will let you to take the test as many as 6 times and still be certified to sell when you pass. Other carriers limit this to 3 times. This means; if you pass the test on the 4th try, some companies will not allow you to write new business that year.
Most Medicare Advantage plan insurers require agents/brokers to take the AHIP Medicare training courses:
Although, United Healthcare is unique and does not require AHIP. Agents can offer UHC Medicare Advantage and PDP plans simply by doing the UHC certification.
After you pass AHIP, you are considered compliant with CMS regulations. In other words, you understand the rules and regulations associated with the plans you are selling to your clients.
One important fact to remember is: Medicare supplement products are not regulated by CMS. Because of this, supplement sales do not require AHIP. Most supplements do not require a certification to sell them.
The new AHIP is available for the following year in July:
Each year in July , the new AHIP certification is available to cover the following year. (July 2020 you can take the 2021 AHIP exam) New agents who want to sell Medicare in May or June may want to wait until July to take the new AHIP. If they take the current AHIP; they will have to take AHIP for the following year in a few months. Taking AHIP in July allows agents to sell for the current year as well as the following year.
Test Modules:
AHIP is comprised of 5 modules followed by a test based on those modules. Most aspects of Medicare are covered including; benefits, rules, compliance and enrollments. It also covers the lesser known/sold PFFS, MSA and Medicare Cost plans. Each module contains sample questions. It is very important to study these and answer them correctly. These questions are very similar or identical as the sample questions in the modules. We recommended that you save the PDF of each module to your computer so you can access them while taking the test. This process is not against the rules for the exam. click here to go to AHIP fraud waste and abuse training
After you pass AHIP:
Once you pass the test, you need to take the FWA modules and test. These modules are not as involved as the main test. Once you finish the FWA test, you can transmit the AHIP results to other carriers electronically through the site. It is important to send the results to all MA/MAPD/PDP carriers you are contracted with and want to certify to sell. You should also keep an electronic copy of your AHIP certificate.
