Medicare Sales Seminar Rules For 2016
The Medicare Sales Seminar Rules for 2016 are attached to this post. We use a Coventry document because, it is a very easy/user friendly documen.t This document will provide a general understanding of all the rules to follow when holding a sales seminar. Each insurance carrier must follow the CMS guidelines for marketing; this makes the rules fairly uniform from across all carriers. It is imperative that you know the CMS Medicare marketing rules. If you engage in non-compliant sales practices, then you may subject you to corrective action. This corrective action could include termination of the contract you hold to sell Medicare products.

A few key things to keep in mind:
- Register all your events: The biggest mistake is having a group meeting/presentation and not registering it. Most insurance carriers have a process to do this for you. It is not time consuming but is vital in order to be compliant with CMS rules.
- Be careful with educational events: An educational event can not have any aspect of sales involved: Do not register an event as educational unless your only goal is to educate people. In my opinion it is much safer to register events as sales events whenever possible. If the event is truly educational, be sure to know the rules regarding what you can and can not say or do during the presentation. CMS Medicare Marketing rules
- Work with the carriers to hold a compliant sales seminar: Most carriers have compliant sales seminars ready for you to use. Some have materials, power point presentations, short videos or all of the above. United Healthcare and Aetna are two that have programs ready made to help agents conduct compliant presentations. Talk to your local marketing rep to see what is available. Be aware that they are likely going to make you do a practice run or two in order to see if you are a good fit as a presenter.
