Medicare Benefit Changes 2022
Medicare benefit changes 2022 are now available. Each year CMS updates Medicare benefit details. Premiums, deductibles and co-insurance amounts are reviewed each year. CMS typically releases updates in November. Updates for the 2022 benefits were released on November 12, 2021 for 2022.
Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B covers the following:
- doctor visits,
- outpatient hospital services,
- certain home health services,
- durable medical equipment (DME), and
- certain medical and health services not covered by Medicare Part A.
The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $170.10 in 2022. This is an increase of $21.60 from $148.50 in 2021. This is an increase of just over 14%. The 2022 annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries is $233. This is an increase of $30 from the 2021 deductible of $203. This increase is almost 15%.
Medicare Benefit Changes 2022: Why Larger Increases?
- Rising prices and utilization across the health care system drive higher premiums.
- Congressional action to significantly lower the increase in the 2021 Medicare Part B premium resulted in the $3.00 per beneficiary per month increase in the Medicare Part B premium. This increase was to end in 2021. However, will continue through 2025.
- Additional contingency reserves due to the uncertainty regarding the potential use of the Alzheimer’s drugs. If covered, significantly higher expenditures for the Medicare program is the result.
Medicare Open Enrollment and Medicare Savings Programs
Medicare Annual Enrollment for 2022 began on October 15, 2021. AEP ends on December 7, 2021. During this time, people eligible for Medicare can change plans. Medicare health and drug plan costs and covered benefits can change from year to year. Therefore, people with Medicare should look at their coverage choices annually.
Low-income seniors and adults with disabilities may qualify to receive financial assistance from the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). The MSPs help pay Medicare premiums. Additionally, may also pay Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.
Medicare Benefit Changes 2022: Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts
Part B and Part D premium amounts are adjusted for Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes. IRMAA are determined using tax information from 2 years prior. Therefore, 2022 amounts are determined using 2020 tax returns. Individuals making more than $91,000 and couples making more than $182,000 are subject.
