How to get an insurance license
Many people have wondered How to get an insurance license, so they can start a new career where they are their own boss. Selling insurance can be a great opportunity if you are both motivated and enjoy helping people. The first thing you need to do is obtain a license, if you want to sell life and health products. Below we list instructions on this process.
The first step: How to get an insurance license; complete a pre-licensing course.
There are a couple different ways to take the pre-licensing course. You should think about which setting is best for you. The classes are offered in either a classroom, online or self study using a textbook at home. The courses are similar in price and content. Many of our agents have used Kaplan for this course (Click here to visit the Kaplan Financial Pre-licensing page). When you are on the Kaplan site, first you select your home state. On the next page, choose the ‘Life and Health’ option (if that is what you are going for). Choose the exam prep package and products that is the best fit for you.
Once you complete your course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Please note; your pre-licensing certificate is valid for one year from the date of completion. You must pass your state exam within this period. Some states require you to bring the original Certificate of Completion to the licensing exam, if you are unable to print it out, make sure that you allow enough time for mail delivery between your course completion and the date of your scheduled exam.
The next step: pass the state licensing exam.
Prometric will provide you with practice exams to use before you take your actual exam.Use the following link to schedule your exam: Prometric Licensing Exam Registration. Select your home state using the alphabetic tab menu and follow the directions they provide.
New Jersey and Pennsylvania administer tests via PSI Online: PSI Online Testing.
For North Carolina licenses, just follow the process at: Pearsonvue NC Insurance Licensing.
You can obtain a Georgia state license by following the process at: Pearsonvue Georgia Insuance Licensing.
If you cannot find your home state either on the Prometric site or above, contact the office at lisa@croweandassociates.com or 203-796-5403 for additional information.
The third step: How to get an insurance license – What to Bring to the exam.
- You will need your original copy of the Certificate of Completion from your pre-licensing course.
2. Also bring a current, signed form of identification. The identification must:
- Be issued by the government (driver’s license, either a state-issued or military id card)
- ID must have both a current photo and your signature
- Your name must match exactly with the name you use to register for the exam
To pass the test you must receive a score of at least a 70%. Prometric will notify the department of insurance of your results within 2 business day of the test.
After you pass the test, you can apply for your license.
You can apply for your license by completing an application at (NIPR) National Insurance Producer Registry website.
