Delayed Medicare Part B enrollment online
There is a new option available for delayed enrollment in Medicare Part B. In the past, beneficiaries could only enroll for Medicare online when they turned 65 during their IEP. Fortunately, CMS/SSA have announced that they have a new tool that allows people over age 65 to do a Delayed Medicare Part B enrollment online. This will make the process much easier for those people who delayed the start of Medicare Part B. Now you will not have to go to the local Social Security office or spend time on the phone. The process will be quicker and easier.
With this process beneficiaries can complete the application for enrollment in Medicare Part B medical insurance (form CMS-40B) online.
They can also complete the Request for Employment Information applications (form CMS-L564) for enrollment into Medicare Part B. The online process will help get beneficiaries their benefits quicker and easier than going to the local Social Security office . The new process will go into effect as of May 26, 2020. This link will be available on both the CMS and SSA websites as of May 26, 2020. After the beneficiary completes the online enrollment, the forms are sent to their local SSA office to be processed.
Delayed Medicare Part B enrollment – Who is eligible to use this process:
Beneficiaries must meet the following criteria to use an SEP for delayed Part B enrollment.
Individuals losing coverage from a large group health plan that is related to their own or a family members employment status can enroll when:
1. They are eligible to enroll during a month that they are enrolled in either a Group health Plan or a Large group health plan based on employment status.
2. During the 8 month period following the final month of enrollment in one of the above mentioned group health plans.
Another circumstance for eligibility is:
- If the beneficiary was eligible for a SEP between March 17, 2020 and June 17, 2020 and neglected to apply for Part B during that time.
- Please note: any beneficiary who is eligible for this SEP must make their request no later than June 17, 2020.
- Beneficiaries can request enrollment either by paper or online application. Both the CMS-40B enrollment form and the CMS-L564 form must be completed.
There are 2 parts to the Form CMS-L564:
- Section A: This part must be completed by the applicant.
2. Section B: The employer section is completed by someone in charge of the GHP or LGHP for your employer. The section provides evidence of your medical coverage as well as dates of employment.

IMPORTANT: If you use the online enrollment, you cannot save the application and finish it later. Any incomplete documents may delay the processing of your application.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CMS waived the requirement for a wet signature. The online application does require an esignature as well as a valid email address.
