    Becoming A Licensed Medicare Agent

    Becoming A Licensed Medicare Agent

Insurance sales can be a lucrative career for the right people.  After all, if you become a Licensed Medicare Agent it can be a great choice.  If you are not only a motivated self starter but you also enjoy interacting with people, you may succeed in the field of insurance sales.  In order to sell Life and Health insurance, you must become licensed. Becoming a licensed Medicare agent is not difficult but there is a process.  We list a step-by-step walk-through of the process as you can see below.

    1. Becoming a licensed Medicare Agent – Complete a pre-licensing course.

Courses tend to be similar in price and content.  Depending on your own specific learning/studying style, you can choose to take the course in a traditional classroom, online or via self-study.  We recommend Kaplan (Click here to visit the Kaplan Financial Pre-licensing page).  Select your home state.  Then choose the ‘Life and Health’ option.  Select the exam prep package and products that will best suit your needs.

When you satisfy the requirements for your course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Pre-licensing education is valid for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe. Connecticut requires you to present an original copy of the Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam, so make sure that you allow at least 5 mail delivery days between your course completion and the date of your scheduled exam.

    2. Pass the State Licensing Exam

Licensing exams are provided by Prometric.  As a result, you can use the following link to schedule an exam online:  Prometric Licensing Exam Registration.  Select your home state from the menu and follow the directions they provide.  NOTE: New Jersey and Pennsylvania administer tests via PSI Online:  PSI Online Testing.  You can obtain a North Carolina  license if you follow the process at:  Pearsonvue NC Insurance Licensing.  Georgia  state licenses are obtained by following the process at:  Pearsonvue Georgia Insuance Licensing.  If your home state is not listed on the Prometric site or above, please contact the office at admin@croweandassociates.com or 203-796-5403 for additional information.

Practice exams are available from your pre-licensing course provider and at Prometric.

What to Bring to the exam: Becoming a licensed Medicare Agent

An original copy of the Certificate of Completion from a completed pre-licensing course of study

A current, signed form of identification.  The identification document must:

    • Be issued by the government (e.g., driver’s license, state-issued or  military id card)
    • Contain both a current photo and your signature
    • Finally have a name that matches exactly with the name used to register for the exam

The passing score required on each exam is 70%.

In fact, Prometric notifies the Department of Insurance of your exam results within 2 business days.

    3. Becoming a licensed Medicare Agent – Apply for License

After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at the National Insurance Producer Registry website.

    Congratulations!

Most companies will require that you have an active Errors and Omissions (liability insurance) Policy.  As a matter of fact, Crowe and Associates offers its contracted agents E&O insurance at a very competitive rate.  Click here to learn more about E&O insurance through Crowe and Associates.

I’m 62 is it to late to start the process to become a Medicare agent?

      • ecrowe Reply June 24, 2020 at 4:05 am

Hi Richard, 62 is certainly not too late to start in Medicare. Keep in mind you are usually working with people age 65 and older. We have a number of very successful Medicare agents in their 60’s and 70’s
