Medicare Advantage plans in various markets have been cancelled or discontinued for January 1, 2013. If your Medicare plan was cancelled, you still have an opportunity to enroll in a new plan. Losing a plan due to a discontinuance, qualifies for an SEP period (Special Election Period) which runs through Feb. 28 2013.
During this time you may enroll in any available Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Medicare Part D plan available in your area. The effective date of your new plan depends on when you apply…..
- If an enrollment request is completed in Jan. 2013, the effective date of the new plan will be Feb. 1, 2013.
- If an enrollment request is completed in Feb. 2013, the effective date of the new plan will be Mar. 1, 2013.
There are many states with plan exits (plan discontinuance). Connecticut, New York and New Jersey had the majority of plan terminations.
